This drum machine for dogs is a rapid prototype delivered to Purina for a project related to non-food product opportunities. It was built primarily with tennis balls, rope, piezoelectric transducers, and an Arduino microcontroller. The Arduino program was based heavily on an open source project called Ardrumo and used the Ardrumo patch to connect the Arduino integrated development environment to trigger MIDI through Apple's Garage Band. When this first article was produced and placed in proximity to a canine, the result was music without any incentives like treats or petting. Dogs love it.
